• Is there a grocery store nearby?
Yes. Discovery Foods is a 5 min drive or you can take a lovely walk and be there in 10 minutes. In the same complex you’ll find a unique gift shop featuring island artists, Forbidden Zone pizza and specialty coffee shop, liquor store and medical clinic. Please do try and visit the Farmers Market located in Courtney, at the Fairgrounds on Saturday mornings, and in Campbell River next to the fishing pier on Sundays! These markets are great places to buy souvenirs and purchase local produce. FYI - There is a Costco in Courtenay.

  • Are there hiking trails nearby?
Yes! The Oyster River trails are 5 minutes away and follow the Oyster River through the forest. .There are lots of spots to stop and swim too! Mt. Washington has extensive hiking trails to challenge you or just for a relaxing stroll .There are miles of boardwalk trails through the alpine meadows in Strathcona Park. You’ll also find more vigorous hikes including the one to beautiful Battleship lake .We’ve done it several times with kids and you can have a swim when you get there! My personal favourite is to pack a picnic and take the ski lift to the top of the mountain for a gorgeous view of the Comox Valley! Another favourite on a hot day is to hike at Elk Falls Park just outside of Campbell River. Elk Falls Park has old growth fir and cedar trees lining the many shaded trails, one of which will take you down to the amazing falls look-out!
  • Do you allow pets?
Sorry but right now we do not allow pets. We love pets and have always had several ourselves but because of allergies etc. our vacation rental is definitely pet free at this time. If a Pet Friendly vacation rental is a must-have for you please check our website periodically. We do have plans to build a dog kennel on the property so in the future you may be able to bring your furry family member along on your Vancouver Island vacation with you.
  • How far is the beach?
The beach is really close! We are literally across the street from Saratoga Beach and are located between your choice of 2 public beach accesses. Less than a 3 min walk and you’re setting up your umbrella on the sand!
  • Are there any restaurants nearby?
Yes, the closest is The Fisherman’s Pub,a Heritage building located right on the Oyster River a 10 minute walk from Home By the Sea. The Salmon Point Pub & Restaurant is just a 7 minutes drive north on the Old Island Hwy 19A. This Marine Pub has a fabulous location right on the ocean with outdoor and indoor dining. The view is really amazing ! They also offer Sunday Brunch. The Driftwood Restaurant offers a delicious Chinese food buffet and is just a 10 minute drive north on the Old Island Hwy 19A. Mt.Washington is a beautiful drive and it takes about 30 min to get to the Lodge. Fat Teddies Pub and family dining is awesome and serves buffet brunch on the weekends! Both Courtenay and Campbell River offer a selection of restaurants from fast food to fine dining.
